antidepressants and alcohol.... ?

Q.If that's not enough, one should consider that liver enzymes are responsible for clearing estrogen from the system. Men who take antidepressants and also take alcohol are stressing their liver in two different ways; the result can quite easily be higher estrogen levels, and in men, that's not good.

A.Where did you find that out at? I have long said a lot of people take all these strong drugs too lightly, yeah you gotta take them but people forget that even alcohol and caffeine and nicotine are drugs also...and they have to be metabolized by the liver also. I try to take as few drugs as possible besides my antidepressant. I drink alcohol, even while on ADs and I really haven't felt any side-effects. I think it might have to do with self-control, I'm always expecting something strange to happen, like getting drunk on just one drink...and it never does. Email responses if you expect a prompt reply. I'm really far too lazy to check every single thread. Just because alcohol depresses the central nervous system does not mean it increases the symptoms of major depression (although I'm sure in some people it can). The warning label on your medicine bottle is not there to keep you from getting depressed due to alcohol, but because mixing meds with alcohol can cause excessive sleepiness and a number of other possible negative side effects. As Elizabeth pointed out to me a few weeks ago, the depressant effect of alcohol is not the same thing as Major Depression. Unless you had a problem with alcohol and alcohol abuse prior to the onset of your major depression, a few drinks simply ain't gonna hurt you while you're on SSRIs, so stop spreading fear campaigns. A smart person on this NG who knows alcohol is a strong depressant drug...kudos to you Amanda. You have clinical depression and have to go on antidepressants. Yet you also use another drug called alcohol which does nothing but depresses your central nervous system. You become more depressed when you drink booze...duh big surprise. The more booze you drink, the more depressed you get. Alcohol does indeed make you more depressed Sean, and a common reason why antidepressants dont work sometimes is because the person wont quit drinking. In fact when I go to a new psychiatrist and tell them I have treatment resistant depression, the first thing they usually ask about is if I have any alcohol or drug problems...especially alcohol. Alcohol is actually the worst drug for a depressed person to use...it just depresses the heck out of you when you are already depressed. Before depression I drank a lot of beer. When I would drink beer I would always get that good beer buzz. I used to love that. Now, when I drink beer, even just two or three beers I dont really even get that warm buzz feeling where you feel good. I just feel more depressed, get tighter feeling in the throat and after a while I will start to feel like crying. I always feel it the next day too. Alcohol is the WORST drug a depressed person can use...any MD or psychiatrist will tell you that.
