antidepressants and breastfeeding ?

Q.Should women taking antidepressants still breastfeed? The drug in question is Zoloft. My daughter is 10 weeks old. Any advice?

A.I suggest asking the La Leche League; they have a list of drugs considered safe while breastfeeding. If the drug you're planning to take isn't on the list, I reckon you can get your doctor to prescribe a different antidepressant that is OK for breastfeeding. How about asking the question the other way around: Should a woman who is breastfeeding take antidepressants? Only you can decide. I suggest using as many natural cures as you can think of, either instead of drugs or in addition to drugs. Take vitamin C (lots), vitamin B, go for walks outside in the sunshine, cuddle your baby a lot, try to get enough rest, including naps if baby interrupts your sleep at night. Arrange frequent times when you can chat with adults, to keep your spirits up; laugh. Breastfeeding is so beneficial to the baby that it's usually best to keep breastfeeding in spite of drugs, imperfect diet of the mother, etc., but some drugs are exceptions.
