antidepressants ?

Q.I've just been prescribed some very mild antidepressants as I've been going through a rough few months and my housing situation is less than ideal (no sound insulation between us and the neighbours upstairs means we hear everything and constantly feel like she is listening in to our conversations. I'm worried about the possibility of them making me gain weight. Has anyone had any experience of amitriptyline? It's a very low dose (10mg each evening). I don't want to start undoing all the effort I've made during the last 10 months. My doctor was very pleased with the 64lb I've lost. He checked my blood pressure which was a bit high - I'm not surprised though - my heart was racing and I had been dreading discussing my problems. He'll check it again when I go back in a month.

A.Weightgain isn't listed as a side effect but severalpeople have told me that it's something that antidepressants can do, it's good to know it;s not automatic. I was on antidepressants for 18 months, as well as anxiety meds. I did put weight on, but I will not ever blame it on the meds. I and only I, was responsible for what went into my mouth. I started ww in feb 2002, while still on the meds - became more concious of what I was eating and guess what? The weight came off. So, my opinion is that the gains are more due to the problem itself, not the form of relief. Anyway ..... if you read the pamphlets included, most of the antidepressants list weight gain AND weight loss as side effects. I take that as an *either you will or you won't* - goes along with my wishy washy mindset.
