Antidepressants & Weight Gain ?
Q.When my allergist put me on amitriptyline he told me "don't let anyone tell you that you are depressed, to be used as an antidepressent it is in a MUCH HIGER doseage". He said it is often used for chronic pain, as it makes a person sleep better and that supposedly helps relieve some of the pain. I was taking 10mg at bedtime, now I take 25mg. I never would have mentioned the fact that I take antidepressants if it weren't for the fact that I've heard of weight gain from the pills. Why a person takes tricyclic antidepressants is irrevalent, I'm just wondering if the weight gain is normal and if it will taper off. I have only been taking the pills since October of 98. I do have an appointment the 1st of March with my allergist. I intend to discuss this with him. I'm hoping I can either quit these pills or switch to something else. Is it possible to take the antidepressants and not gain weight from them?
A.I also had problem with weight gain when taking Antidepressants. My doctor said most people lose weight when they take them. I tried different ones also. I was on them for my PMS. I tried Zoloft and Prozac I can't think of the other one I tried. They all did the same. Let me know if you find one that does not promote weight gain. I have been on desipramine since 12/93 for chronic pain resulting in clin. depression.... unfortunately, I was never told that they cause weight gain, until last month during a physical. I have been trying to get my doc's to allow me to quit them and they have continually advised to stay on them.... all the while I have had a steady slow weight gain that after this length of time has resulted in an enormous overall gain... I wondered why they were not saying anything about the continual gain.... I had not realized that they were causing it... and no matter what I asked, they told me that my weight gain was not related to any medication I was taking.. now I have the daunting task of trying to take all the weight off while still on the pills, albeit a much lower dose..... That's exactly the same situation I'm in - I switched to Wellbutrin yesterday. I'm really hoping it works. I gained 25 lbs on Prozac, which was pretty upsetting, especially considering that Prozac isn't supposed to make you gain weight! Of course, I don't know that I can blame my weight gain on that - there were a lot of factors. On the other hand, I would much rather take a drug that doesn't make me gain weight at all.
