Symptoms of Clinical Depression Symptoms of clinical depression include a persistent sad or "empty" mood almost every day for most of the day and loss of interest or pleasure in ordinary activities... Depression is the most common psychiatric illness found in the general population. Close to 10% of Americans will have suffered from depression sometime in the course of their lifetime. In cancer patients, depression may be even more frequent. As many as 10% to 50% of cancer patients are likely to experience depression at some point during their illness. The more seriously ill the patient, the more commonly the patient has depression. The term depression can be confusing because it actually has several meanings, symptomatic depression and clinical depression. People with cancer can suffer from either one of these. Symptomatic depression is a mood or feeling that may follow a sad event. When a person looks sad and dejected it's said that he is depressed. In this case, depression is a common emotion, closely related to feelings of discouragement and frustration. This mood disturbance may be short-lived, or may last days or longer. Having a depressed mood is unpleasant. Those with symptomatic depression can be recognized and distinguished from those with clinical depression because they respond to encouragement from others and find ways to cope. This is the idea behind support groups. To a great extent people with this kind of depression, have some control over how to cope even when life is especially challenging. Clinical depression is very different from symptomatic depression People with clinical depression do not respond to encouragement. Typically they show a loss of ambition or interest in things that were once enjoyable. While it may begin in the same way as symptomatic depression it is a much more serious disorder. It is a biological disorder that affects a number of vital functions. It affects mood (such as happiness, sadness); thinking (such as decreased concentration or having negative thoughts, including thoughts about suicide); behavior (such as the loss of motivation to do things), and physical functions (such as sleep and appetite). Clinical depression is treatable. People with clinical depression usually do not get better with encouragement and social support alone, but often need antidepressant medication.
