Clinical Depression Wikipedia. New Yahoo Group-Dysthymia - Recover from Depression ?

Q.Depression is becoming one of the commonest illness in the Uk, causing suffering, illness, to people of all ages and most walks of life. However there is one type of Depression that although suffered by quite a portion of those who suffer depression in the Uk is little known about that is Dysthymia or Dysthymic Disorder.

A.Perhaps I (and many others) have been wrongly diagnosed! More likely the group hasn't researched the subject properly. According to Wikipedia: It [dysthymia] differs from clinical depression in the severity of the symptoms. While dysthymia usually does not prevent a person from functioning, it prevents full enjoyment of life." To summarize the rest and avoid copyright problems, depression is seen as episodic in nature. When an episoide of major deporession comes on top of dysthymia, it is called "double depression." The dysthymic person is accepted more by the community, and functions better, but in the long term, the disease can be just as damaging. Does it boil down to "dysthymia is constant, non-episodic depression."? I don't really know. My diagnosis has allways been depression which fluctuates in severity and will never go away completely. I will ask my pdoc at my next appointment. I have been diagnosed with dysthymia and major recurring depression. The "double" depression you mention. In the U.S. (the U.K. Has its own definitions) dysthymia is a low level depression that lasts more than two weeks. Yes, it lasts years. For me it does interfere with daily life, as there is always a grey cloud hanging over everything I do. I have found that meds only help so far, they don't ever get rid of this feeling completely. With the major recurring depression, I hit really bad lows and can stop functioning all together. The dysthymia prevents me from functioning normally, slows me down quite a lot but the major depression can stop me cold. It also makes me quite weepy, and hopeless. The dysthymia makes me apathetic. I am not sure if that helps with understanding, it is hard to describe. I was first diagnosed with depression at 13. About 15 years ago I started taking meds, and I found out what my diagnoses was. I am 49 now. I have only just realised that I have been suffering from dysthymia nearly all my life with fairly short ( months) intervals of being ok. My earliest memory as a child is sitting in an open upstairs window and wanting to fall out. I can empaphise so much with your email. Now a lot of whats been happening to me in the last few years makes more sense. I am recovering from the second bout of reactive depression but the key for me now is that I have had mild depression all my life which is why I have been so unassertive and easy to manipulate which has put me in circumstances that have lowered even further my self worth and lack of will to live.
