Depression and treatment (Re: Why fear death?) ?

Q.one does not have to be "imprisoned" in a "psychiatric hospital" to be treated for depression and suicidal thoughts. I suffered from both those things once upon a time (in fact, only about a year ago). I was in real bad shape from depression, caused by perceived personal inadequacies and inadequate relationships with others. I sought treatment. You know what happened then?

A.True, but only if the person suffering from depression accepts treatment, otherwise they *would* have to be imprisoned. Also, if you were feeling suicidaly depressed and sought treatment, then there may come a time when those treating you decided that you needed confining, (for your own good of course,) and so you loose the option of death. I can't imagine a worse fate than wanting to die but being unable to do so. dying for no good reason, dying because you're suffering from depression because of problems that you think are intractible but really aren't, dying because you want a permanent solution to temporary (and treatible, correctible) problems. I strongly agree with Doug that the idea that depression is "treated" only in a psychiatric hospital with all sorts of strange drugs is completely false. Depression is an illness, and should always be treated - and in the vast majority of cases, it's treated by a doctor or psychiatrist with no need whatsoever for hospital stays. Some people can be treated just through counselling, others need medications, but anti-depressants are not dangerous, or addictive, or imprisoning - as Doug said, they are freeing. They deal with a chemical imbalance, and free you to be the person you really are, not clouded by misery usually caused by a simple chemical deficiency. For me, and for many others, anti-depressant medications are as essential as insulin is for some diabetics. Depression is a hellish illness, and one of its most cruel symptoms is that it's often impossible to believe that you can be helped or that you even deserve treatment. If you have a friend who is depressed, the greatest thing you can do for them is get them to see a doctor, and support them and be there for them. Treatment isn't a prison - depression is a prison, treatment sets you free. Just one thing - I think you're very right in your last sentence, but not so right in your first. Curable and treatable are different things. Depression is, in the vast majority of cases, extremely treatable. It is not always curable - that is, it doesn't always go away on treatment and not come back. Significant numbers of people have to remain on treatment for much of their lives. Not all are "cured". Have you tried the herb St johns wort tea. Joy it is an excellent herb for lifting the spirits and reducing depression, it takes about 3 weeks on average to get into the system properly but it has had remarkable results on many people who do not wish to take conventional drugs, you would need to work out the dose for yourself, but something like 2 tsp twice a day, would be about average, raised or lowered as you need. but obviously dont overdo it, huge amounts of herbs are as dangeriouse as overdoses of conventional drugs, it might be well worth trying the usual use is to pour just off the boil water onto the herb leave for 30 min, sieve then add honey and drink ,
