Why is Depression preferred over Mania?Q.I am not very familiar with the symptoms and repercussions of an episode or state of "Mania", but I have read in several occasions that whenever a patient is given a medication that triggers mania, the medication is IMMEDIATELY discontinued. It doesn't matter that the patient will go back to suicidal depression and maybe end up killing him/herself. It seems like no matter how deep the depression, it is always preferred over Mania by doctors and patients alike. Now, my question is: What exactly is Mania? What are the symptoms and consequences of a manic episode? If Mania is the total opposite of depression, i.e. a state of euphoria, who wouldn't prefer it over depression? I would gladly change my depression for a life of mania. A.One of the reasons I'm asking this question is because I am wondering whether my successful year on an AD might have been a little bit of a manic episode as well, since now I am learning of certain things that I screwed up because of my overconfidence which sometimes bordered in arrogance and self-centerism. In many occasions I acted, or rather acted "out", due to my self-confidence and self-worth being way too high on my scale. It seems now like I overdid it. Could this have been mania? If anyone has knowledge on what mania really is and what its positive or negative connotations are, or if anyone has a link on this, I would really appreciate the information. Also, if anyone suffers from mania, I would like to hear whether you prefer it over depression, or vice-versa, and why. Mania is much more like what you'd commonly call insane. People rarely sleep, don't think, act impulsive etc. It's also harder to control with medication than depression (depressed people are mostly a risk to themselves, manic ones can cause wreck havoc with their actions). There have been cases where people would change good paid jobs for bad ones during manic episodes etc pp. Usually you also don't get mania alone but manic-depressive (AKA bipolar personaly disorder) so you have manic episodes and major depressive ones which would make it even harder to cope with either one. It's usually also the case that depressed people act rational in any situations but the ones that are somehow related to their depression whereas manic ones are following whatever thought is currently on their mind, without thinking about the consequences.
