Is this depression glass?Q.I was hoping that someone out there could help me identify this garage sale find (and maybe help me date it too). It is a ruby/pink, depression era?, unmarked glass pitcher. A.I can't clearly see how the handle is attached, but what I can see, looks like blown glass (rather than pressed glass, which is what depression glass would be). What does the bottom look like? That'd be my guess too. Hand-blown production item. BTW, ruby doesn't have to be deep, dark red. It happens that I'm reading these posts while drinking from a gold ruby glass I made myself, and it's a fairly light pink. If you start with a colored glass on the blowpipe and then repeatedly gather clear over it, which is the way I work, then you can vary the intensity of almost any color. If you only gather from a pot of colored glass and don't gather over it with clear, then the only variable will be the wall thickness of the piece. The color is pretty much what the batch in the pot dictates. You get what you cook! My guess is that the light pink is a manganese pink. Manganese is also a decolorizer, which allows a factory to use crappy iron-laden sand (green -- think coke bottle.) The manganese "takes the green out."
