Depression Medication Comparison, depression hurts... ?
Q.I think there are lots of different types of depression, and different causes for it. Sometimes the cause is purely physical - body chemistry. In that case, probably medication is the only thing that will help. However, it is possible to go into a deep depression for various other reasons. That kind of depression can be just as debilitation while it lasts. My mother was deeply depressed for almost a year after she lost her mother and her beloved dog about a month apart. Eventually she came out of it without medication.
A.was depressed after he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He reminded me of the little man in the Li'l Abner comic strip who had a cloud over his head. He was dragging us all down. One evening I just blew up. I reminded him that he hadn't been told it was terminal and he was getting radiation treatments. I also said, "If worst comes to worst, you'll be out of it, and I'll be the one who has to deal with everything. If I can act like a human being, why can't you?" Or words to that effect. He actually snapped out of it and became his old cheerful self. When he called me at work many months later to tell me he'd just gotten the news that the cancer was back and worse than ever, he sounded just as depressed as he had the first time. However, by the time I got home from work, he had snapped himself out of it. I know that doesn't work with people who are clinically depressed, and probably not with many people who are depressed because of their health or because of something that happened. However, it did work for him.
