depression and smoking (long) ?

Q.People diagnosed with major depression are three times more likely to smoke, while habitual smokers are nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed with depression, a new study shows. colleagues at the Henry Ford Health Sciences Center in Detroit, followed 1, 007 members of a health maintenance organization, aged 21 to 30, over a five-year period, and found that the link between major depression and daily smoking often began in adolescence.

A.It was not clear exactly what linked depression with smoking. Possible explanations include social environment, personality, and coping style, researchers said. It's also possible that smoking might be self-medication for depressed moods or that the effects of nicotine are more pronounced in those prone to depression. Note this is not new research and the current research is tracking does the depression or smoking come first? It seems in adults, it's the depression; but in teens it's the smoking.
