A.the high school took part in National Depression Screening Day last Thursday, an event sponsored yearly by a national mental health foundation to promote awareness of depression, and ways to identify and remedy it. The school was only one of 12 high schools in the nation to ask its students to take the depression screening test. That may sound to most people like a solid idea, given the number of studies showing that depression is widespread, even among children and especially teenagers. But a small group affiliated with the Church of Scientology did not think so and picketed outside the high school Wednesday. Leading the four protesters was Kevin Hall, director of the Boston chapter of the Citizens Commission on Human Rights, which is financed by the church. The commission alleges that the depression screenings are part of a conspiracy to promote sales of antidepressant drugs, such as Prozac and its phamaceutical cousins.
