Depression-related suicide prevalence overstated ?Q.Suicide is a known risk in some people who are alive. 100 cases over 30 years? That's like mega-representative of something, probably. I'm a statistic, too! A."Depression-related suicide prevalence overstated: Suicide is a known risk in some people suffering from depression. New evidence reveals that risk is less than previously believed. A Mayo Clinic study to be published in the American Journal of Psychiatry cautions that the commonly held notion that about 15 percent of people diagnosed with depression will commit suicide may be overstated. After analyzing 100 suicide studies conducted over the past 30 years, Mayo Clinic researchers concluded that the lifetime risk of suicide, or suicide prevalence, for patients with depression actually ranges from 2.0 percent to 8.6 percent." An interesting and related question is whether antidepressants reduce the risk of suicide. A recent analysis of 45 controlled clinical trials involving 8,731 participants found no significant difference in suicide risk between patients receiving placebo and those receiving the active drug. the old "AD's are no better than placebo" argument.
