Query: Green Glass, Possibly Depression ?Q.The goblets are moderately heavy, about 5 inches tall and 2 inches diameter at the top. The stem is thick and only about 1" tall, so the ""bowl" of the goblet is on the tall and narrow side. Color is light green, similar to that of green depression glass. The outside of each goblet is covered with a thin layer of "textured" glass of the same color. For various reasons, it looks as if this layer was applied on top of a plain green glass goblet, tho I doubt that this is really the technique used to make them. About 1/4" around the rim has no "texture." In addition, the goblets have a floral design; in the leaf, stem and flower areas, the smooth glass layer is exposed. A.The "F" in the shield is the mark for Federal glass; they went into business about 1900, and by the 20's were mass-producing glass using automated methods, so their prices were originally pretty low-end. I don't recognize the pattern you describe, but they did have a textured finish that was described as "crackled." Green was a popular color for Federal glass in the early 30's, but was phased out about 1936. I doubt that these are repros -- the pattern doesn't sound like any of the depression glass pieces that are commonly known to have been reproduced. But Federal didn't make glass in that color after 1936. Most of the green glass made in the '50's-'70's was darker. Depression glass green glows slightly in UV light (like vaseline glass, except more faintly) because the pigment used was at least in part uranium oxide, the same pigment used for vaseline glass. Not only was that shade of green way out of style after the '30's, it was cheaper and easier to use other, newer pigments. UV light can be a tool in determining whether a piece of green depression glass is repro or not. I don't know that it's foolproof in all cases, but it's certainly true with Mayfair repros in green -- the original glows, and the repro does not.
