Clinical and Major Depression ?

Q.Does anyone in the group know the difference between the two? A few years ago I had these diagnosis's, one was from a pychiatrist (major) and the clinical was a family doctor. I am trying something different by going off the Prozac to see exactly how I feel, so far it's only been a couple of days. I'd like to get off antidepressants, but when you have this type of "diagnosis" hanging over your head it's hard to think I'm doing the right thing. Anyone ever try to go off their anti-depressant and if so, was it a good or bad experience?

A.The diagnosis is usually clinical depression-it is an older diagnosis but still used throughout the discipline major depression is usually (and again its an oldie) used for major affective depressions of psychotic type manifestations of depression-since you typed rather coherently I would gather it was a misdiagnosis of sorts where the doc meant you are significantly depressed you must wean off these meds slowly-prozac has a long half life so it is actually easier to get off of, but do have a doc supervise your taper down and discontinuation. What you can expect is as varied as there are people-you may feel great, or depressed--most times clinical depression, or endogenous depressions tend to be recurrent and chronic on some level-so don't be surprised-using cbt therapy can hold many escalations in abeyance. I'm a secretary which is why I type well (thanks for the compliment), but back in 1995 I made some poor decisions (and was on Prozac at the time) and I voluntarily admitted myself to an inpatient treatment center for adults with depression/suicidal problems and other types of disorders. I'm the type of person who is determined to keep my "thoughts" as stable as possible for the sake of my children who I have sole custody of. I know there are so many forms of depression and disorders....I took an "online test" last night and the results showed possible bi-polar. That scared the heck out of me since at one time the psychiatrist said he really wasn't sure of what type of depression I had, but he suspected major and possibly manic. I don't see him anymore, all he did was look at his clock most of the time and wrote a different prescription everytime, would love to find a good psychiatrist in the New Orleans area. Thank you so much for the information and always being here for the people in the group. It's so nice of you to take time out of your day to help us all.
