can fathers get postpartum depression?
Q.I'm wondering if father's can get this as well? I've developed some bad depression and I'm worrying all the time, worrying like hell. I want to be the best father I can be, but I'm always feeling like I'm not. This has caused alot of anxiety/depression. I was going through some depression before my baby was born, but it seems i've overworked myself and I might be taking things way too fast. Do you know what I mean? Is this a possibility?
A.Of course having a new child can trigger depression in a father as well as a mother, although you probably wouldn't call it postpartum in the father's case because it lacks the hormonal aspect which might be a contributing cause in the mother's case. Major life changes, even if they are positive, are stressful and stress is a trigger for those vunerable. Few life changes are as major as having a child. In my own case I'm a male who started having symptoms of mental illness for the first time as an adult a few months after the birth of my oldest child. The birth definitely wasn't the only thing happening to me that year but it was clearly one of the major factors.
